Chapter 15

Clint and Trevor sat inside Sugah Cakes at one of the bistro tables absent-mindedly watching the passers-by. Sugah Cakes had closed an hour ago and they had the place to themselves.

Trevor took a big bite of his slice of Hummingbird Cake. “I don’t know how you can work around this all day and not blow up.”

“That’s because I know restraint and I exercise,” he said flexing his biceps and Trevor snickered. “What’s wrong?”

“I don’t think that restraint applies to Larkin,” he said. His brother had made him a silent partner in his affair. Every time Clint was with Larkin, he always told Violet that he was sleeping at his place.

Clint wearily rubbed his hand over his face. Ever since the Halloween party he had been seeing Larkin once or twice a week, with sex being the main objective. They did it everywhere, in his truck, her truck, the kitchen, the bathroom, and once even in a dressing room. Larkin constantly took pictures of them to capture their time together. “Yeah, that situation is getting out of control. I don’t love her, but being with her is showing me what’s missing from my marriage.”

“What are you going to do?” Trevor asked, then took a big gulp of milk.

“I really would like to spend some time with Violet and talk, really talk. I want to know why she’s been acting the way she’s been acting. I don’t want to make any major decisions without giving us a chance.”

“Get away for the weekend. Why don’t you go away for Thanksgiving?” Trevor suggested.

“That’s a good idea.”

“But don’t you ever, ever admit to the affair,” Trevor advised.

“Oh, I won’t, believe that! I did that one time, I won’t do that again.”
